I was wondering if anyone would plough through such a long piece ... typically getting tired myself if a post gets past a certain length.

Bob - yep, there're variations in all schools. But take heart, there are also overlaps in solid martial arts programs! The Japanese talk about a concept call 'Shu-ha-ri' describing one's journey through the arts. First you have to embrace the technique to learn it. Then you explore variations. Then you discard everything to finally learn the true lessons of the art. What happens when you are learning from a teacher himself on that path? What will he teach you after he learns these 'true lessons'? Just a thought. :-)

ColinColin Weehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01777513509370303056noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7261308875817560474.post-8283992629896294582008-07-11T20:44:00.000+08:002008-07-11T20:44:00.000+08:00Nice article! I just finished skimming it and plan to go back through it at a slower pace when I have some time.

I love taekwondo but at the same time get frustrated with it! People don't realize the variations. My current school came from a line of schools that used to be US Chung Do Kwan.

They broke and formed their own association. They still call themselves "traditional" yet the use the very popular WTF forms. They also tend to interpret those forms from what I'd call a "traditional" point of view.

Ah well, my TKD journey is soon ending and I'm heading down the Kung Fu path. Ironically I'm finding out that there are stylistic varriations and disagreements within Kung Fu too!

Sigh.

~BCPBSMhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13599662252662686373noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7261308875817560474.post-45262073216356685912008-07-11T20:31:00.000+08:002008-07-11T20:31:00.000+08:00Colin, It is clear that you certainly have put in ...Colin, It is clear that you certainly have put in some effort into answering the questions.
